Doctoring a Wild Turkey

One of our clients called us, she found a wild turkey that had been hit by a car. She wanted to know if we would see it. Dr. Josh is usually up for anything, so he came back early from lunch to see it. When she arrived, the turkey had woken up in the back seat of her car and she couldn’t get it out. Between Dr. Josh and one of the technicians, they were able to get hold of it and get it into the hospital.

He was a 3 to 4 year old male in pretty good shape. One of his wings seemed like it may be injured when Dr. Josh examined him. They took x-rays and everything looked fine. He also had a laceration on the side of his head which Dr. Josh cleaned and sutured up.

He spent the night in a crate at Dr. Josh’s house and was released the next morning. He ran off into the woods like nothing ever happened.

You never know what’s going to come in the door here. We’ve always seen dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and other pocket pets. When Dr. Budd came to the practice years ago, we added birds and reptiles to the animals we treat. Since then we’ve seen all sizes of birds, snakes, iguanas, geckos, small pigs, ducks, squirrels, turtles and tortoises. Since Dr. Josh has joined us, I guess we treat wild turkey’s now too.
