Foods Toxic to Pets and Other Foods They Shouldn’t Eat

Alcohol

Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma, and death.

Grapes and Raisins

Can cause kidney failure.

Macadamia Nuts

Can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia (elevated body temperature).

Onions, Garlic and Chives

Can cause gastrointestinal irritation and possibly red blood cell damage.

Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, Caffeine

Can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and death. The darker the chocolate the worse it is for pets.

Raw Eggs

Can contain salmonella and E. coli. Can cause decreased absorption of biotin (a B vitamin).

Bones

Can cause choking, obstruction or puncture of the digestive tract.

Raw Meats

Can contain salmonella and E. coli.

Fatty Meats

Can cause pancreatitis, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Salt and Salty Foods in Large Amounts

Can cause excessive thirst and urination, sodium ion poisoning. Can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures and death.

Xylitol (artificial sweetener common in sugar-free products)

Can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), vomiting, lethargy, loss of coordination, seizures and liver failure.

Raw Yeast Dough

Can cause alcohol intoxication, bloating and gastric dilatation-volvulus.

If your pet ingests anything of concern contact your veterinarian immediately.
