Use a pet or toddler toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Make sure the toothbrush fits comfortably in your pet’s mouth. Use a yummy flavored toothpaste, like chicken, made specifically for animals. Do not use human toothpaste. Put small amounts of toothpaste on the brush and let your pup lick and chew on it. You can use a small amount on the toothbrush as a treat for several days before going any further. If your pup has food allergies speak with your veterinarian before choosing a toothpaste.
Put a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and gently rub on your pet’s teeth and gums. Stop as soon as your pet tires of it. Be sure to give lots of praise. Continue offering the toothbrush with toothpaste as a treat or reward.
When your pup is ready, you can transition to using a small piece of gauze. Eventually work your way up to using the toothbrush. If at any time your pup seems painful or you notice any blood, stop and contact your veterinarian.
Focus on the outer surfaces of the teeth. Vigorous brushing isn’t necessary. Always be mindful to keep the experience pleasant for your pet. Patience and persistence are the most important things.
