How to Treat Bug Bites and Stings in Dogs

Bees

Bee stings are painful but rarely harmful. Use a credit card to scrape the stinger out. Don’t use anything to squeeze the stinger, you may release more venom. Clean the area with mild soap and water. Cold compresses or ice can help with swelling. Don’t apply ice directly to the skin, wrap in a towel first. You can apply over the counter cortisone cream to help with pain. See your veterinarian immediately if your pet receives multiple stings.

Wasps

Wasp stings are painful but rarely harmful. Wasps don’t leave a stinger behind, but they can sting more than once. Clean the area with mild soap and water. Cold compresses or ice can help with swelling. Don’t apply ice directly to the skin, wrap in a towel first. You can apply over the counter cortisone cream to help with pain. See your veterinarian immediately if your pet receives multiple stings.

Mosquitoes

Mosquito bites are not only itchy, but they can transmit heartworms and other diseases to our pets. Make sure all your pets are up to date on heartworm prevention. Some topical flea preventions are labeled to help with mosquitoes. There are mosquito repellent sprays made for dogs that may help. Never apply products containing DEET to animals.

Fire Ants

If your pet gets into fire ants, don’t panic. Carefully brush the ants off wearing gloves. Be careful and calm to avoid aggravating the ants and causing them to bite. Don’t swat at them or spray them with water. Apply cold compresses or ice to minimize swelling. Apply over the counter cortisone or antihistamine cream to help with itching. See our veterinarian immediately if your pet receives multiple bites.

Allergic Reactions

While most stings or bites are mild and not a concern, even one sting can cause a severe reaction in some pets. Seek veterinary care immediately if your pet has multiple stings or bites or if you notice any of these signs:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Facial swelling
  • Excessive swelling at site
  • Excessive itching
  • General weakness
  • Hives
